India elect
This business travel goal is a workshop in Mangalore India. I travel some days ahead of the Operations Workshop, apprentices of my team and team members are working on a efficiency project. This gives me the opportunity for grooming and have a update on status direct in the field.
The winter slight kicked in on the moment when I leave the Netherlands, Mangalore weather forecast is around 33 degree Celsius at noon. This 30 degree difference is doing something with my body, it needs some time to adjust. Mostly it takes 24 hours from cold to hot and 4 days from hot to cold. In the first scenario I start sweating and getting tired of the heat, the second scenario is more painful because everywhere I’m going its cold. The team is doing a great job, not all parameters are green only there is a plan and a back-up plan to cover the yellow parts of the plan. The communication between the 7 members is on par and more important the stakeholders of the project are informed per schedule. The feedback I get from the stakeholders is positive based on the baseline we set on the beginning of the project. I like the transparent and candor feedback what together with the team directly can transformed in even a better performance. Before the workshop people flying in like I did and that gives the opportunity to pre-meet and discuss topics that desire face to face. Dennis is an American I know him from the start of my international career. I invite him for a dinner at the restaurant ”The Village”, it’s a nice class restaurant with an excellent choice of food varieties. We start with king prawns from the tandoori oven tossed with garlic in butter. During main course, flat fish prepared with red chilly spices according the locals do, the always awkward discussion for me gets starts, Politics. Now the USA has an President elect that in most not American countries is lifting eyebrows, is for me to understand how an gentleman American is reacting on this. I got a nice variety of interesting points, this make me understand better how this President elect got this position.
The Workshop gets starts with tea and coffee like all other places in the world, there is of course the Indian Mangalore touch with nice bittersweet cookies and sugar with the truckload. Almost all colleagues are there, two are still traveling and will arrival later during the event. In the evening there are possibilities to have small diner meetings and so we do. The last evening we have a joint dinner in the bar of the Ocean Pearl Hotel, its complete transferred in a dining hall with the bar features like unmissable flat screens still in place. Relaxed, comfortable and not formal we have our drinks and excellent food made by the chef of the restaurant. The staff is doing a great job to give every person of our group feeling them special. The group is a mix of nationalities, the Indian colleagues are also coming from different regions. What bind is Suzlon, the spoken languages are mostly Hindu and English nevertheless 25+ different official Indian languages with uncountable accents and probably more different cultures are making communicating not easy. And the non-Indians are coming from the USA, Germany & the Netherlands, and are communicating in English. Like every dinner with a large group you have the early birds who leaving while for a small group the evening just starts. And with this small international group mixed with Indian colleagues we watching the transfer of power in the USA and are giving the relaxed comments. Finally we call it a day and walking back to my room I have to think on a phrase made in the evening. What a nice story to remember and to tell that we saw the transformation from President Elect to the 45th President of the USA.
